Mauricio Garces
Mauricio Garces

Biography:

Mauricio Garces was born Mauricio Férez (sometimes spelled "Feres" or "Pérez") Yazbek in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Known in Spanish as "The Silver Fox" and noted as "The Eternal Seductor", single-handly brought Mexican theater comedy to a sexy and stylish turn during the late 50s and throughout the 60s. He grew up in a Lebanese family, from which famous photographers surged. His uncle Tufi Yasbek (a popular cinema celebries' portrayer) was the one who introduced young Mauricio to the world of Mexican luminaries's scene. His career as an actor was encouraged by the help of his other uncle, whom included Garces in the cast of the movie "La Muerte Enamorada", comedy staring Miroslava and Fernado Fernandez. Since that movie, Mauricio adopted his artistic name "Garces". He created his Alias "Garces" to honor his conviction that the letter G would be a good luck charm, and maybe it would make a star out of him such as the case of his personal heroes: Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Cary Grant. The elegant, worldly, and liberal character which made him famous started thanks to the vision of the producer Angellica Ortiz who hired Mauricio to star "Don Juan 67" first of a series of movies in which he played his alter-ego "Mauricio Galan". After starring in 22 films between 1967 and 1971, including co-productions with Spain and Argentina, the other major Spanish-language film-making nations Garcés made few films over the last two decades of his life, concentrating on television and stage work. After the death of his mother, Garcés health began to fail. He underwent at least one operation, returned to work, but not long afterwards died of emphysema at his brother's home in Mexico City, on 27 February 1989. Even though his greatest successes lay 20 years in the past, Garcés was still known fondly as the epitome of the suave playboy, and his friends, co-workers, and fans mourned his passing.
